Bumper case fixes iPhone reception, but STILL not recommended by Consumer Reports

On Friday, Apple announced an official quick fix to the iPhone 4′s notorious antenna issue; a free case to all current iPhone owners, as well as to those who buy the iPhone before September 30th. While the case will technically solve any antenna problems users are having with the phone, the free accessory is still not the permanent solution Consumer Reports is looking for to finally recommend the iPhone 4. According to their blog, Consumer Reports says that Apple’s free case program is “a good first step,” but will continue to list the iPhone 4 as “not recommended” until a permanent, long-term fix is implemented.

It sounds like Apple is trying to remedy the reception issues short-term with the free cases while avoiding a full recall, and buying some time to reevaluate the actual severity of the situation before a possibly redesign of the phone’s antenna.

In the mean time, for those looking for a different, albeit colorful and stylish solution, try throwing a bandage on your iPhone’s antenna gap.
