As if TV needed any more gentle nudges to remind it that it may soon be rendered obsolete by free streaming services such as Hulu, a rumor has sprouted up from NewTeeVee.com that Apple may soon provide streaming through its next Apple TV model. According to NewTeeVee’s unnamed “sources,” Apple has been looking into renting out individual TV shows in high definition for just $0.99. The rumor has yet to be confirmed or denied by Apple, but it makes sense; according to an Engadget article earlier this year, the new Apple TV will come with flash storage, making streaming a probable alternative to downloading media to a hard drive.
This rumor comes just one week after the launch of Hulu’s “Plus” subscription service, which offers full seasons of several series, and across multiple platforms, including iPad and iPhone for $9.99 per month. Maybe TV should take the not-so-subtle hint that we’re thinking of subscribing to someone else. It’s not TV, it’s us, and it’s time to move on.
