Gaming on Android may be about to get a jump start. Engadget reported Wednesday that a “trusted source” has confirmed a new gaming smartphone from Sony Ericsson is in the “late stages of planning.” The smartphone, which will run Android OS 3.0 and be branded with the PlayStation name, has been called a cross between Samsung’s Captivate and Sony’s PSP Go. Gaming on the new device will be made easier with a landscape-sliding D-Pad and four standard PlayStation buttons, as well as PSP shoulder buttons, and a so-called “long touch pad” in place of a joystick. As for actual games, the Android Market will feature a special section or store just for the device, and games will be as graphically advanced as PlayStation 1 or PlayStation Portable games. No release date has been set, though Engadget says the device could be launched as early as October.
Engadget claims the phone is more than just rumor; Google has been looking for a way to jump into the gaming market, and consumers have been looking for a PlayStation-branded phone from Sony for years.
