The FaceTime feature on Apple’s iPhone 4 was originally restricted to WiFi, making it not all that useful or handy all the time. However, since the US government declared jailbreaking legal, this doesn’t need to be the case. An article on Gizmodo earlier today describes the surprisingly-simple two-step process to use FaceTime over 3G:
1. First you need to jailbreak your iPhone 4. This is a very easy procedure: Just go to this page and follow the instructions on screen. You don’t have to install any software and there is no danger in doing this (you can always restore your iPhone 4 to factory settings with iTunes).
2. Go to this page and download the My3G program. This is what makes possible to FaceTime with the 3G network. It only costs $4 and you can try it for free.
9to5mac did some testing, and then Gizmodo followed up with an article; a FaceTime call over 3G “with lots of movement” uses about 3MB of data per minute. Unfortunately, this will add up, especially after AT&T cut their unlimited data plan back in early June. But that’s just a small price to pay to be able to say that we are, finally, without a doubt, in the future! Now where’s my hoverboard?
