PlayStation emulation now on Android

iPhone and iPod owners have been able to emulate classic video game consoles for years (albeit not officially), as long as the device was jailbroken. Android-users, however, can now purchase an app to emulate Sony’s original PlayStation console, legally and legitimately. PSX4Droid 1.0, by video game homebrewers ZodTTD and yongzh, entered the Android Market today and allows users who have the appropriate game ROM files to play classic games PlayStation games directly on an Android device. Though obtaining ROMs isn’t always legal, the app itself does not break any rules or laws. Don’t expect an iOS equivalent, though. While emulators are not explicitly prohibited from Apple’s App Store, similar apps (including one to emulate Commodore 64 and one to emulate the Nintendo Entertainment System) have been denied publication in the past, on the grounds that they violate the rule that an “Application may not itself install or launch other executable code by any means.” As long as Apple retains this rule, the future for emulation in the App Store looks bleak. However, those with an Android device can legally purchase PSX4Droid from the Android Market for $5.99.
