Boxee’s thoughts on the new Apple TV

With the redesigned Apple TV finally announced at Apple’s keynote event thie Wednesday, there’s bound to be some feedback from consumers and manufacturers alike. One of the most interesting responses to the new set-top box comes from a major rival of the product. On their blog Wednesday, makers of the Boxee Box commented on Apple’s new product, and also gave some information about their own. According to their blog, the members of Boxee team are excited to see the release of the Apple TV, and the competition it will bring, saying “We all watched the Apple announcement. We walked away feeling strongly confident about the space it left for Boxee to compete.”

There are several differences between the Boxee service and Apple TV. As mentioned on Boxee Blog, “The Boxee Box is going to be $100 more expensive than the Apple TV, but will give you the freedom to watch what you want.” The Boxee Box will cost $200, but provide thousands of shows, movies, and web videos for free, as long as users have the physical box in their homes. On the other hand, Apple TV will launch at just under $100, but most TV shows will cost $0.99 to rent, and movies will start at $2.99. In the long run, it may be cheaper to get the Boxee Box, but until it box is released, it will be tough to say which one will be the “better” device.

The new Apple TV is available from Apple’s website this week. The Boxee Box will launch in November.
