Review: Cartoonatic+

Last year, we reviewed FX Photo Studio for both iPhone and iPad by app developer MacPhunCartoonatic+ is a new(er) fun little app that lets users throw on a number of different cartoon/comic book filters on their iPhone photos and videos.

Like most photo/video filter apps, there are enough different filters to keep users entertained. But is the app worth paying for? Read the full review below.

All of Cartoonatic+’s filters are all really fun. Some filters are cartoony (Lost Strawberry, Cute Harley), while others emulate popular comic book styles (Spacy Laney, Robotron Jr.).

In fact, there’s not really a bad filter in the bunch. However, some are a little more usable than others: a couple are pretty rough-looking in low light situations, or for catching details.

One unique part of Cartoonatic+ is that it works on videos as well as photos, completely live. Sure, there are a few other apps that do live photo, or video post-processing, but Cartoonatic+ handles it quite well.

You’re on your own for focus, unfortunately, as there’s no way to manually change the focus in-app; tapping the screen changes the filter. The app also lacks the Volume Button shutter feature.

Not all of Cartoonatic+'s filters are the best for capturing finer details

Cartoonatic+ also allows users to speed up video and add music to create comedic masterpieces. Of course, there’s also the option to post your creations to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and email.

So, what’s the different between the free version of the app (Cartoonatic) and the $0.99 version (Cartoonatic+)? Well, the free version only applies filters to video, while the paid version includes both photo and video. Cartoonatic+ also includes three new filters, and tends to get updated a little more often.

Overall, the app is really fun to play around with. As with most apps, feel free to try out the demo before paying for the app to see if it’s your cup of tea.

But if you’re into goofy, cartoon-y photo effects, you’ll probably love it.

Trying the free version would make you purchase the paid one. Really cool app!
